BIS-NY’s music department is world class! Our daughter was taught to play the cornet beautifully; she has also thoroughly enjoyed singing in the choir. We feel her participation in this has been a large factor in her overall growth in confidence as a pupil in the past 18 months.

Building on the rich foundations of the Early Years, in Year 1 lessons become more formal in their structure, but there is still exploration, discovery and fun in a supportive and engaging environment.  As the children progress through the school they are introduced to new areas of study and opportunities for responsibility.

The core subjects such as literacy and numeracy are taught daily, in order to successfully embed and consolidate those key strands. The inter-disciplinary approach enables the application of these skills to be effectively integrated throughout the day, whether it's the practice of how to write a question in French, or how to call to mind mathematical concepts during the exploration of specific art projects. Literacy is elevated beyond the school community to include published works in national newspapers like The Guardian (UK) here and International Education Magazines.

Subject specialists work to incorporate themes from the specific unit into their own area of study; so music instruction may address the historical context of a specific style of music, allowing children to revisit areas of exploration through a wider lens. The breadth and opportunity for engagement in this approach clearly manifests in deep learning in all subject levels, and not just for those who may be particularly talented musicians, artists or linguists.

The program continues to expand to give children the benefit of specialist teaching in Art, Technology, French, Spanish, Music, Swimming, P.E. and Games and Drama.
