The quality of artwork created as part of the Fifth Grade Exhibition project was fantastic. The pupils were asked to create a juxtaposition relating to their chosen themes and the results showed not only an in-depth understanding of their topics, but also great imagination in the communication of their perspective.

Design, and the subsequent development of new technologies, has given rise to profound changes in society: transforming how we access and process information; how we adapt our environment; how we communicate with others; how we are able to solve problems; how we work and live.

Throughout our Design course at The British International School of New York students become graphic designers, animators, set creators, web designers, architects, fashion designers and more.

As part of the Middle Years Programme (MYP), Design challenges all students to:

  • apply practical and creative thinking skills to solve design problems
  • explore the role of design in both historical and contemporary contexts
  • consider their responsibilities when making design decisions and taking action.

Inquiry and problem-solving are at the heart of Design, and by utilization of the design cycle students are able to experience the value of structuring the inquiry from the outset in design, the analysis of problems, development of feasible solutions, creation of solutions, and critically the testing and evaluation of the solution. They experience the importance of re-testing and revisiting, tweaking and reflecting not just as part of the design process, but as a wider reaching life-skill.
