Music & Drama
The Music Programme at BIS-NY plays an integral part in the comprehensive framework of the IB Curriculum. Knowledge and understanding are enriched in collaboration with other subjects. The children’s natural inquisitiveness is enhanced by exploring music from various times and cultures, as well as developing students’ musicianship and skills with a wide variety of offerings.
Using Zoltán Kodály and Carl Orff methods, children as young as four years old are taught the fundamentals of music and notation. Recorders are introduced in Year 4 and violins are introduced in Year 5. Woodwind instruments are introduced in Year 6, in addition Chimes Ensemble is open to Years 7 and above. The practical learning aspect of instrumental studies is expanded upon with music theory and composition, history and appreciation. As extra-curricular options, students are encouraged to participate in the saxophone, clarinet and violin clubs. Choir is available to students beginning in Year 3.
One element that contributes to the effectiveness of the music programme is excellent faculty consisting of accomplished musicians who are experienced performers as well as educators. In addition to music classes, BIS-NY’s Music Department offers private lessons in guitar, piano, violin, voice and woodwinds.
All the children have the opportunity to perform in the winter and summer concerts in addition to numerous recitals and ensemble concerts.
