At BIS-NY, we believe language is at the heart of student learning. In fact, in addition to our many British and American families, our student body has over 30 nationalities represented.
Fundamental to thinking, communicating and self-expression, language permeates all aspects of the curriculum. We believe that the opportunity to learn more than one language can enhance cognitive development, at the same time developing cultural identity, emotional stability, a global focus and fostering international-mindedness.
All students at BIS-NY experience an enriched language programme in which English is the medium of instruction.
French or Spanish is taught as an additional language from the age of three, and Advanced French is offered for any students that may have already acquired some competency in the language. In conjunction with French or Spanish, MYP students also begin Latin.
Additional languages, including Mandarin and Italian are available as after-school options to all students.
English as an Additional Language (EAL)
For students that arrive at BIS-NY with limited knowledge of English, we offer a modified programme to help assist in their language acquisition and development. The objective of this programme is to facilitate successful integration of these students into the BIS-NY community, academically and socially.
