Katy Shuttleworth

Head of English

Katy Shuttleworth, Ms. K.

Having taught for a year in Vietnam, Katy decided to pursue her love of working with children. She completed a Psychology degree at the University of Sheffield and in her spare time she captained the rowing club and worked in a special needs playgroup. During the long university holidays she taught in an orphanage in Ghana, Africa and worked on a yacht in the south of France.

On completing her degree, she took up an internship at the Chicago International Children’s Film Festival where she helped to develop a media literacy curriculum for a summer camp, as well as researching the need to educate children about and through culturally diverse films.
After returning from the U.S., Katy went to the University of Cambridge to undertake her P.G.C.E in middle years (specialising in English). She then taught in a middle school which she thoroughly enjoyed.

Working for the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority in London, her job involved reviewing bids for new educational research projects, analysing and reviewing research findings and coordinating the work of senior markers.

During her summer holidays in 2010, Ms Shuttleworth, along with Ms Gutierrez and Mr Campbell, volunteered in San Andres, Colombia. Funded by the Ministry of Education in Colombia, their work included facilitating discussion groups and presenting workshops for teachers aimed at providing continuing professional development in the core areas of planning, assessment and other key elements of pedagogy.

More recently, Katy has taken part in an online course provided through the Harvard Graduate School of Education on making thinking visible in the classroom. Through experimentation, reflection, application and participation in learning communities, she has developed an understanding of how a culture of thinking can be launched, strengthened, and sustained within the classroom environment. She strongly believes in the importance of making thinking visible and recognizes the integral relationship between learning, understanding, and thinking.

Overall, Katy believes that creativity and enthusiasm are two of the most important factors in a child’s education and strives to inject both into her teaching. In her spare time, Katy enjoys all kinds of sports including fair-weather running (!), tennis and skiing in the winter. She is passionate about the theatre and especially loves musicals.
