Jonathan Campbell

Primary Years Co-ordinator & Teacher

Jonathan Campbell Campbell, Mr. J.Mr. Campbell is an enthusiastic and experienced educator who is passionate about his job and about the development and the diversity of the learning process. He completed a post graduate degree in history and classics from Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand and then went on to work for six years as an art educator at Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. During his tenure he was seconded to work on the art and historical content of the museum’s website and database and then to develop and deliver art and history based programmes for school and adult educational groups.

Whilst working at the Museum of New Zealand, Mr. Campbell took a sabbatical to lecture in Roman art and architecture at Victoria University. In addition, he has also written several textbooks on the art and culture of ancient Greece and Rome which are now the recommended textbooks for the senior secondary school examinations in classics.

After moving to England in 2000 and working at a school for children with profound and multiple learning disorders, Mr. Campbell achieved Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in 2002 by completing the Graduate Teacher Programme under the auspices of Kingston University. He then went on to teach at Heathfield Junior School in Twickenham for several years and more recently he spent a very rewarding two years at St Thomas’ Church of England school in Kensington, London.

After leaving England in 2007, Mr. Campbell spent a year teaching Year Two at the British School of Kuwait. He also travelled extensively throughout the Middle East and visited places he had only dreamt of seeing. Most recently, he spent his 2010 summer break with Miss Shuttleworth and Miss Guttierez volunteering in San Andres, Colombia. Working for a charity funded by the Ministry of Education they led discussion groups and presented a series of lectures for teachers aimed at providing continuing professional development in the core areas of planning, assessment and other key elements of pedagogy.

Most recently, Mr. Campbell has joined Harvard’s Graduate School of Education where he has worked on producing a series of class-based practical research projects that focused on pedagogy and on helping children to make the most of the flexibility and fluidity of their learning process. Through experimentation, reflection, application and participation in learning communities, he has developed an understanding of how a culture of thinking can be launched, strengthened, and sustained within the classroom environment

Mr. Campbell is currently the head of King House and has, with his other housemasters, lead in the development and evolution of the house system since it was instituted at BISNY in 2009. In his capacity as housemaster Mr. Campbell created the student council which continues to grow from strength to strength and he also initiated the school’s community service program which has seen many members of our school community give freely of their time to help others. However in September 2011, Mr Campbell will officially relinquish his role as head of house to welcome in Mrs. Caroline Carter as the new Head of King House.

In September 2011 Mr. Campbell will remain in his current position as Year Four teacher.  He will also look forward to taking up the new role of Primary Years Coordinator and joining BISNY’s Senior Leadership Team.  This new position will see Mr. Campbell assume the responsibility for the pastoral care and day to day running of Year’s Three through Six. All in all, the 2011-2012 school year promises to be as rewarding as it is exciting. He can’t wait!
