Amanda Bulgarelli

Teacher

Amanda Bulgarelli Bulgarelli, Ms. A.Amanda was raised in the very small, but lovely, rural town of Efland, North Carolina. Mrs. Bulgarelli received her BA(with honors) in Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2006. She was destined to be a teacher from a young age as her family regularly demonstrated, dressed up, and taught about Colonial Life at many of the battlegrounds in the area. They covered many different ways of life that spanned the 1600’s- 1900’s and this is where she really developed a love for experiential learning. Amanda also spent many summers teaching campers, of all ages, different skills ranging from bracelet making to horse-back riding at summer camps across the US. After graduating and obtaining her NC teaching certificate, she decided to take a year to travel and sail.

Amanda drove all over the US, visiting a total of 22 states in 3 months, and then flew to Australia where she joined a tall ship as crew. The ship, The Windeward Bound, was located in Hobart, Tasmania and served as a training vessel for young, troubled teens in the area as well as a learning environment for people of all ages who wanted to sail for a day or a week! She taught math, reading, knot-tying, cooking, and the ways of the ship. Following her stint on Windy, she found a tall ship named the Duyfken that was a replica of a small 1606 Dutch exploration ship. Amanda taught all who came aboard about life in the 1600’s for traders and explorers as the ship became an historic museum as soon as it was in port.

Following her travels, Mrs. Bulgarelli taught for one year in inner-city Durham, NC and 3 years in Harlem, NY. She consistently raises the levels of scores in reading and mathematics for all students in her class. She firmly believes in the IB programme and is excited to join the British International School of New York to further student exploration and learning. She has always used inquiry-based learning and will continue to explore student-driven instruction within BIS-NY.
