BIS-NY Hosts NY Debate League Inaugural Event

BIS-NY was one of the very first schools to not only participate but also to host a tournament in the newly formed “New York Debate League”. In conjunction with the English Speaking Union and the Middle Years Debate Program, BIS-NY hosted this inaugural event on Saturday 3rd December.
Students from Years 6-8 discussed, mused, asserted, refuted, argued and examined topics such as nuclear power use in the US, NATO’s role in Afghanistan and whether television was a bad influence.
Four teams of three from BIS-NY engaged in the debating against Hackley School and Garden State School in New Jersey. Claude, Mia and Nicholas’ team won a trophy for coming third overall and Laurent, Livia and Elijah won a medal for coming fifth. Nicholas also achieved an impressive individual points score and was given even more silverware!
We are very excited and proud of all of the students who participated and can’t wait for our next tournament which is to be held on Saturday 11th February, 2012.
